I thought it would be fun to show an illustration in progress rather than waiting until it's done. This is a piece I've been working at on and off for a week or so now, as evidenced by my latest YouTube vid:
[link] Anyone who's followed my work for any length of time knows how much I'm a fan of the work of Hayao Miyazaki, and of 'Totoro' in particular. For some reason this image popped into my head the other day of a wonderful old Japanese shrine built to honor Totoro. As soon as it came to me I knew I had to get it into an illustration. Here's hoping I do the idea justice. Maybe I'll show another 'in progress' scan before unveiling the final piece. |

I feel sympathetic to your plight. I am a recent graduate of Virginia Marti College of Art & Design (located in Lakewood Ohio), and I too have had a hard time earning a living as a graphic artist. It sounded like you had a good thing going, though; teaching English to Japanese schoolchildren.
Since we're virtually in the same boat, I think I'll order Miki Falls from Amazon or whoever has it available. Your HowTo videos on YouTube are an inspiration to me. I hope to use what I've learned from you to help launch my career as an American Mangaka.
